The Bible really came ALIVE for
me on this mission. An example is that while in Ghana, the Lord opened a
door for us to teach at 3 locations that were not on the schedule. First,
to the youth at Global Revival Church in Accra. They are an amazing group
of young people and we truly enjoyed ministering to them.
We were also able to teach and
minister at Nana Wiafe Methodist Vocational Institute (an all-female
technical school) while in Kwahu. While there half of the young ladies gave
their lives to the Lord (I believe the other half were already born-again).
We also went to a Street Girls Aid Home in Accra. This is a place where
young ladies who are pregnant or new mothers can come and stay to get off
the streets. As we ministered, every one of them accepted Christ as their
personal Lord and Savior - even a few of them who initially indicated they
were Muslim. These two unscheduled stops reminded me of John 4:4 (Amplified
version) which states “It was necessary for Him to go through Samaria.”
Jesus had an unscheduled stop to make. In doing so the woman at the well,
as well as the other Samarians received Christ. This is the same way we
felt when making these two unscheduled stops. These young ladies needed to
receive Christ! Again, GOD IS FAITHFUL!!!
LIBERIA
We then headed to Liberia.
Please pray for Liberia, which is in the process of rebuilding after many
years of civil war. There is no running water or electricity in the entire
country (except for the Firestone compound). Many people spent years in
refugee camps or in other countries after being forced from their homes. UN
peacekeeping forces still ride around in jeeps and fly overhead in planes.
We taught in both Monrovia (the
capital) and a city called Buchanan. We met many WONDERFUL people as we
taught at Open Bible Standard Schools, Open Bible Standard Church young
adult group, African Young Life Outreach Ministries, Inc. (AYLOM Inc.), and
Firestone adult education class, in all reaching about 1,000 people. We
taught seven two-hour classes in 4 days. By the end of the week my voice
was nearly gone. This was also after teaching an entire week in Ghana. By
the last day I just handed the mic over to Sis. June and said “here”. I
literally could barely talk. My voice was just above a whisper. However,
again, God is faithful! By that evening, the Lord gave me grace to teach
the final class which was the Firestone adult education class in Monrovia.
The adults were really into the teachings. They also know how important
this information is not only for themselves, but for their children as
well.
I was very blessed and
encouraged when I returned home and received a message that the youth and
adults are sharing this information with their friends who were not at the
sessions. The youth are also sharing the information with their parents.
This is important because we learned that many parents pressure their youth
to go out and earn money to help with household expenses by, yes you guessed
it, going out and having sex. These same youth are now empowered to let
their parents know that this is not the way and how it affects the WHOLE
person. In fact, before I even left for Africa, I knew that the issue
of sex for money due to poverty would come up. And indeed, in EVERY class
(in both Ghana and Liberia), this issue came up. I asked the Lord (before
leaving for Africa) how to address this issue. God is so wise! He gave the
most simple answer. He said to ask them if a person could not have sex for
money [whether due to sores from STD’s or whatever], what would they do?
Would they just lie down, give up and wait to die? Or would they find
another way to survive? God showed us that there is ALWAYS another
way! It was so wonderful to share this revelation from the Lord with the
classes. They all agreed that yes, there is ALWAYS another way!
Don’t you just love the Lord!
Another reason the scriptures
became alive for me is because while in Liberia we were blessed and
fortunate to have met Her Excellency, Madam President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
This reminded me of Proverbs 18:16 which states
“A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him
before great men.” It was very exciting to
meet her. She is very “presidential and dignified”.
All in all this mission’s trip
was an EXCITING, BLESSED and MEMORABLE experience. Not only were those we
ministered to blessed, but we were blessed as well, and we look forward to
more to come!
